DIY Alphabet Wall Hanging: from canvas drop cloth

Home Decor, Project Gallery / Wednesday, April 29th, 2020

For several months now I have been working on small updates in the twins’ room, which now includes this DIY alphabet wall hanging. After looking around for different wall decor ideas, I decided to save some money and create my own.

This is a fairly simple and affordable project depending on what you have on hand or what you would need to purchase.

Supplies/Tools

  1. Drop cloth canvas piece- roughly 26″x 40.5″
  2. Paint (I used gray acrylic craft paint)
  3. Wood dowels or other thin long wood (round or square)
  4. Stain for wood dowels (optional)
  5. Sewing machine or hot glue gun
  6. Contact paper for DIY stencil (Options: letter stencils or printed design, I will explain below)

I am including a short video showing some of the steps I filmed while making this canvas. The video does not include every step with a lot of detail, therefore I will try to include some written instructions as well.

DIY Alphabet Wall Hanging Steps

  1. Cut drop cloth to desired size. Mine was roughly 26″ x 40.5″ Iron it smooth and flat.
  2. Mark out guidelines with pencil for letter positioning. I like to use a framing square to mark out my lines, it keeps everything straight and square to the piece of fabric.
  3. Use stencil to paint letters (I printed mine on contact paper using my cameo silhouette) There are other options too, which I explain in the video.
  4. Fold the 4 edges over and sew (or hot glue) in place. Leave a “pocket” at the top of the canvas and the bottom to insert dowel. Think of this step like sewing a curtain panel.
  5. Cut and stain wood dowels to desired length. Alternative could be a curtain rod.
  6. Tie string around top dowel to hang on wall.
DIY Alphabet Wall Hanging

I was able to make this project using only supplies I had on hand already, making it the perfect project during our quarantine. If you do not have a drop cloth you could try using other scrap fabric.

Don’t want to try your hand at this DIY Alphabet Wall Hanging, check out this cute option!

If you are wanting to try some other DIY decor, I have several wood sign tutorials to check out as well, like this 4 signs in one or How Great Thou Art.

Hope to share more of the twins room update as I finish different projects in here!
