An easy and simple DIY that adds a homemade touch to your Christmas

Christmas is a special and unique time to celebrate the birth of Jesus! I love filling our home with purposeful decorations to remind my family what and WHO this season is about. However, I have had a hard time finding something I love in the stores, therefor I was inspired to make some of my own decor pieces.

I have teamed up with some other gals who have some great Christmas DIY’s to share with you as well. Make sure you go check them out as well! I will share their info at the end.

Names of Jesus Ornament: Supplies

Wood ornament supplies
  • 1/2″ Square wood dowels
  • Jute string (or other ribbon/string)
  • Black gel pen
  • Paint (acrylic, latex or sharpie paint pens are all good options)
  • Stain or other wood finish (optional: these also look great natural)
  • Masking tape

Tools:

  • Saw
  • Drill with bit (7/64″ or 11/64″ size bit)
  • Scissors
  • Craft paint brush
  • Sandpaper

1. Cut

First, cut a square wood dowel into 4″ long ornaments. (or cut to whatever size you want.) I used my miter saw but you can also use a hand saw.

Tip: when cutting small pieces like dowels I wrap masking tape around where I am going to cut. This helps prevent tear out. I have a picture below showing the difference.

Look at the difference between the two cuts below: one had masking tape wrapped around it and one did not. This is a pretty easy step for eliminating most of the tear out. If you are still experiencing tear out-your blade is probably dull.

2. Drill hole

After cutting, drill a small hole in one end of the piece. Then give the edges a quick sand to smooth out any rough areas.

3. Stain/Wood Oil (optional)

I added a little bit of color to the wood using some Dark Walnut Danish Oil. This stuff is great because its an all in one finish but use whatever wood stain you have laying around or leave natural.

4. Decorate

Next, use a pen to write on the ornament. I tried a couple different pens/markers etc and found that a gel pen worked best for not bleeding into the wood. I did try a sharpie fine tip marker, however it bled a little bit.

Tip: Don’t have great handwriting? Me either! I usually type what I want to write on a word document then try my best to copy the font style.

Decorate however you like: lyrics from a Christmas song, Family names, favorite Christmas phrases, etc.

I chose to write several of the names of Jesus on my ornaments.

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas, it is good for my heart to dwell and treasure who Jesus is. He is the Light of the World! He is the Good Shepherd, Messiah, Deliverer, and Prince of Peace. Here is a short list of names of Jesus and verse reference if you interested.

Then on the back of each ornament I also wrote a verse reference for where that name of Jesus is found. These would be great to use as a part of advent!

After writing, I painted the ends of several ornaments with leftover green and white paint samples I had. Use whatever paint you have around or try a sharpie paint pen or regular sharpie.

Finally, finish them off by tying on some jute string.

Ways to use them

  • Hang on your tree as ornaments
  • Give as a gift or gift tag
  • Embellish a Christmas wreath or garland
  • Use as a part of advent. Each name of Jesus has a scripture reference that could be read and then the ornament hung.

  1. oh my goodness, I had so much fun with these and they were exactly what I was looking for! They turned out great! they are first going to be a part of centerpieces then I think I may give them as gifts.
I couldn’t find the square wood dowels but thankfully my Joann had unfinished wood that would work! And my left over stain was soooo dark but I made it work, so I did 6 with the stain, 6 unfinished and 6 with a watered down paint. they look lovely.
