Dresser Makeover: Chalk Paint for the win!

Furniture, Project Gallery / Wednesday, November 21st, 2018

Today, I am excited to share this chalk paint dresser makeover, because I got to try out a new product! And the results are awesome!

I was shopping at The Fall Old House Vintage Market and came across a booth, Vintage and Restore By K, doing a demonstration using her custom chalk paint. I got to try it out first hand and was interested in trying it on some of my own projects.  Since then, I have tried out two of the colors and have had a great experience, including this dresser makeover.

For this dresser, I used Vintage and Restore by K, Chalk Paint in the color Denver Slate. You can order your own paint here.

Chalk Paint Dresser Makeover

This dresser did not need much in terms of repairs and was structurally sound. It just needed a little facelift. Here is a before photo!

The dresser construction is a combination of laminate, mdf, solid wood and plywood. Laminate can be a difficult surface to paint, because it is such a smooth, non porous surface. This was an opportunity to test out how well the chalk paint adheres.

Steps for my Dresser Makeover

First, I pried these two trim pieces from the upper drawers. They were damaged and not necessary.

Next, I removed all the hardware, patched any holes and gave the top a light sanding! Then it was time to paint!

It took 2 coats on most of the dresser and an additional coat in a couple spots. I loved how the second coat went on smoothly.

Lastly, I applied polycrylic to seal it and installed the new hardware!

This 16 oz jar of chalk paint covered the entire dresser, with extra to spare! The coverage is excellent! The only question now is, what will I paint next?

If you have a piece of furniture that needs a little makeover, I would encourage you to check out this chalk paint. Or if you are looking for your next “new” used piece of furniture, check out my guidelines for selecting used furniture, by clicking on the image below.

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!
