Boys room refresh

Mini Makeovers, Project Gallery, Room Updates / Monday, March 9th, 2020

I tend to get inspired to update and redo things often, and from that came the start of the boys room refresh. I call it the “boys room” because some day I hope to separate the twins and have both of my boys sleeping together.

One of the main changes I wanted to make was adding a LEGO play/storage/building area. LEGOS are probably one of our most played with and loved toys. All the kids play with them and we often play or build together as a family. I decided upon using two IKEA’s trofast units!

They worked perfectly! But of course I couldn’t just add some new furniture without making some other changes.

Changes for the boys room refresh

1. Bed update

First, I updated the IKEA bunkbed from the raw wood. Since, I didn’t want to disassemble the whole bed to take outside to stain and clear coat, I opted for a different product. Watco Danish Oil one step finish in dark walnut. It easily wiped on with a rag and was done in about an hour!

Added just enough subtle color./

2. Paint walls

I opted to try something different on the walls than the usual for me: color! After trying many samples I could not decide what color to pick and ultimately let the boy pick! After all it is his room. Behr: Silky White for top portion and Behr: Heritage Park for the dark green.

3. LEGO Station

Originally I planned to pick up two IKEA trofast units and stain them to match the other wood in the room. After many failed attempts I let that idea go and opted for leaving them as it. I would still like to add some type of top to cover both units. Maybe a thin sheet of hardboard or some type of craft mat? And possibly add some castor wheels on the bottom as well so they can easily pushed out of the way.

We love LEGOS in this house and having everything more organized has encouraged more play and quicker building of sets. We sorted all the LEGOS by color or type, making it so much easier if you are trying to build a set from instructions.

4. Repositioned shelving

I still like the wood and pipe shelving I made years ago, but needed to reposition them over the new lego area. Cut down one shelf and centered both on the wall. Easy.

5. New decor : LEGO prints

Lastly, I added new wall decor LEGO prints. They are free printables from The Okie Home. Go check her out!

I printed all 4 patents on tabloid size paper and built a simple wood frame for them. So easy and so neat looking!

Boys room refresh done!

This was not an overly complicated room update. Amazing what a little paint, stain and time can do. Let me know if you have any questions!
