Metal Cabinet Makeover

Furniture, Project Gallery / Tuesday, May 29th, 2018

Hi! I am in the middle of several different projects right now, and am hoping to share them all soon. I am finding I can finish projects faster than I am able to write about them.

Today, I wanted to share a little furniture makeover I did a couple weeks ago. I was shopping at the thrift store and came across a metal cabinet. It had a neat glass front and seemed to be in good shape. I was able to buy it for $5.50!

The cabinet was in decent condition when I bought it, so it just needed a little cleaning, fresh paint and a new top.

At some point, I think it had something attached to the top, possibly a stacking cabinet, because it had some slots in the top corners. I knew I was going to add a wood top, so these would be covered up and not a problem. I popped out the metal “clips”.

The glass door was in good shape. I needed to scrape off a sticker and reposition the glass a bit, but otherwise it was fine as it was.

Initially, I spray painted the cabinet a vintage aqua blue, but I was having trouble getting smooth, even coverage. I had several spots that kept bubbling (there may have been oil residue on the metal, that I didn’t clean off well enough before applying paint, but I am not sure).

Eventually, I sanded it lightly and pulled out my tried and true, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure White. I did 2 coats of paint, distressed it a bit with sandpaper and called it good.

While the paint was drying, I assembled a top with scrap wood. I found a piece of plywood and cut some 1″x2″ pine for the edges. I used Minwax Dark Walnut, followed by Minwax Classic Gray to stain the top. I  finished the wood with Briwax Clear Wax.

Lastly, I used liquid nails to glue the wood top onto the cabinet.

This was a pretty painless project, minus the spray paint trouble I had initially, which was frustrating. But in the end I think I prefer the white color over the blue. When I bought this cabinet I had planned to make it pretty then sell it, but I have decided to keep it for the time being. This would not be the first time I planned to redo something to sell and ended up adding to our house. What can I say, I like furniture!

Have a great day!

Emily
