Master Bedroom Update: 6 years of changes

Project Gallery / Saturday, November 13th, 2021

Time to reveal our master bedroom update… just 6 years in the making! After adding a DIY wall treatment recently, I was flipping back through all the photos of our bedroom and was amazed how much has changed over the years and how some things have remained the same. Sometimes, it can feel like change should happen in an instant these days, but that is rarely true. Time, energy, priorities, budget and so many other factors all play a role. This post is less of a “How To” and more of sharing the changes in this room over time.

The biggest change is obviously the improvement in my photography skills! Joking aside there are some other changes and quite a few things that are the same. Carpet, bench (although now it is a different stain), nightstands (fresh coat paint), lamps and baskets are the same. Also, the bed placement and general layout of the room is the same today as it was 6 years ago.

DIY Changes and Updates

This room is full of many DIY projects and updates, some pretty small and others a little more involved.

  • Painted ceiling white!
  • Refreshed ceiling fan-read about that here
  • Painted walls…3 times!!! It is okay to change your mind and for your style/preference to change
  • Trimmed windows: read more of my first updates in this room and how I added trim to windows: here
  • Refinished dresser: a labor of love project!
  • DIY mirror and then mirror makeover
  • Always and Forever DIY sign. I have full tutorial posted for that.
  • Wall treatment

Mirror Update

I decided this big wall needed a BIG mirror so I switched out my DIY mirror (now in the guest bedroom) for a second hand mirror I updated with some paint. Now the scale seems right!

Master Bedroom Update: DIY Wall Treatment

Itching to switch things up a bit this year and continue the long master bedroom update project, I added a wall treatment. Floor to ceiling board and batten look. It was quick and easy. MDF ripped down to size on my table saw, nail, caulk and paint. If you want a more full tutorial on installation you can read about that in my dining room board and batten post.

Master Bedroom Update: Space and Function Changes

Our bed and nightstands have not moved since the day we moved in. The wall they are on is really the best fit. This room is huge and honestly has a lot of wasted space. The extra space has changed over the years as I have tried to figure out what to do with it. Functionally we didn’t need it. I had different furniture arrangements and decor set up to literally take up visual space.

For the longest time we had a faux fireplace set up with various arrangements. No functional purpose.

Then this year we decided to set up a home office in our room, and for the first time in 6 years that extra square footage was going to be put to use! Desk, bookshelf and chair were existing pieces we had, so we just moved them upstairs.

Side note: This desk was actually one of the very first refinishing projects I every did! It was my 4-H project when I was in High School. This picture makes me happy, because I see a desk I refinished, a bookshelf my hubby and I made, a chair I reupholstered, walls I painted and a bench I built. Not all in one weekend. It was NOT instant. Projects that were done over years and years.

Be encouraged if you have ever felt like transformation happens instantly for everyone else but you. This shows 6 years of small changes. Time.
